3 Lead Magnet Tips to Growing an Email List Fast!

Back in the day when I started out with email marketing, it was super easy to build a big email subscriber list fast.

That’s because email was still a bit of a novelty to a lot of people, and they were willing to freely give their email address away in exchange for a weekly newsletter or download.

That however, is not the way things work today and regrettably there's still a lot of email marketing manuals floating around that teach list-building strategies from 15 years ago.

Even some new manuals teach this rehashed garbage, simply because the product creator hasn’t built a list in the last decade, and that’s why some of today’s list builders are making so many mistakes.

One of the top mistakes they’re making is to offer a low quality lead magnet in exchange for an email address.

For me, the words “lead magnet” is the first clue indicating that in order to draw a quality subscriber to my list, I need to offer something of quality in exchange for their email address.

This means that I don't just offer them something cheap because I'm giving it away for free and it's also not the time to blow the dust off some PLR report that hasn’t seen the light of day since 2005, or that resell rights report that’s completely saturated in the market. 

Doing these things will result in tiny double-digit subscriber numbers (subscribers who are completely unresponsive) while I'm dreaming about five and six figure lists.

Tip #1 – Make it Desireable

I give my subscribers what they want... I don’t guess what my target market wants. Instead, I roll up my sleeves and do some market research.

The best way I've found to do this is to go to marketplaces like Amazon.com and Clickbank.com, check out what’s selling like crazy in my niche, and then create something similar to offer for free.

It’s a good bet that if my target market is already willing to give out money in exchange for a specific type of product – such as a weight loss cookbook or a blogging guide, for example – then they’ll snap it up when I offer it to them for free (in exchange for subscribing to my list).

Tip #2 – Make It Usable

I give my subscribers something they'll refer back to often... the more often a subscriber uses my lead magnet product, the more they see my branding, ads and calls to action. That’s why I offer a resource or tool that they’ll use more than just once.

For example, if it’s a weight loss ebook, I'd include meal plans, recipes, measuring charts, etc. – something that they'll refer back to frequently.


Tip #3 – Make It Valuable

I give my subscribers something that has monetary value... this is something that I would normally easily charge money for – $25, $50, $100 or more.

You see, a lot of list builders make the mistake of using a cheap product as a lead magnet. They think that since they’re giving it away, then the product itself shouldn’t be worth much.

Actually, you should be doing just the opposite.

I make sure that the products I give away in exchange for someone subscribing to my list, is valuable and will knock my subscribers’ socks off. I show them that I give away desirable-usable-valuable products that are even better than what others are selling.

This not only boosts my opt-in rates, it also boosts my backend conversion rates, leaving many subscribers wanting to buy what I'm selling.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that I need my lead magnet to live up to its name so that it attracts quality prospects. But I also need it to work hard for me in converting these prospects into cash-paying customers.

Using the above 3 tips, I've ensured that I offer the best lead magnets to draw in the best subscribers.

In fact, there are a whole lot more (simple) things like this that email marketers overlook when building their lists – and then they wonder why they can’t attract quality subscribers that are responsive and who will interact with their emails and buy what they're offering.
